In his latest interview with Sherif Amer on MBC Masr, Dr. Mostafa Elfeki, Director of the Library of Alexandria, said that the trilateral summit between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus was a continuation of several meetings since 2014, which aimed to build a strategic partnership between the three countries. He noted that the geographical and cultural proximity between these countries had consolidated this strategic relationship, and that the Turkish antagonism towards the three countries had rapidly strengthened the relations between them.
Moreover, he referred to the social and cultural relations between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus, particularly the life of the Greeks and Cypriots in certain Egyptian cities, such as Alexandria, until the sixties. He said that many Greek families used to live in Alexandria, highlighting the fact that Egypt, Cyprus and Greece are always looking for their common roots.
In addition, Elfeki maintained that Turkey has become a source of unrest in the Arab and Mediterranean region. He said that it supports ISIS and exploits the migrants’ issue to put pressure on Europe, a move that upset some EU countries. He also asserted that a quick decision by the southern Mediterranean countries was necessary to confront the threatening Turkish presence in the region.
