The Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the restoration process of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate’s manuscripts. It was held on Wednesday, 6 October 2021, at 1:00 pm, and was attended by Dr. Moustafa Elfeki, Director of the BA; Pope Theodore II, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa; and Charalambos Bakirtzis, Director of the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation (the project’s donor).
The ceremony included a display of 7 manuscripts representing the last batch of total 87 manuscripts that were restored, processed, and digitized by a team from the restoration and chemistry laboratories (BA Manuscripts Museum). It also featured a documentary film screening tackling the phases of the project from its outset in October 2012, until its final stages in April 2021.
The restoration team was committed to preserving the historical and artistic characteristics of the restored manuscripts, through following a set of international standards with regard to chemical processing, choosing restoration materials, maintenance measures, and designing acid-free storage boxes.
