Dr. Moustafa Elfeki, Director of the Library of Alexandria stated, “Religions should not be accused of crimes committed in their name. In Egypt, public talk is open for all as long as it does not infringe upon the principles of Egyptian nationalism. However, religious discussions should be limited to scholars.”
Dr. Elfeki gave an address as part of the roundtable discussion organized by the BA entitled “Islam and Politics” on 22 December 2019. A host of religious scholars, intellectuals, and media men attended the event.
Dr. Elfeki added that Egypt was never a sectarian country and that sectarianism is a deeply rooted phenomenon in other countries and often leads to conflicts and destruction. However, Muslims and Christians in Egypt share common history and national identity and they have no history of conflicts.
