In his latest interview with Sherif Amer on MBC Masr, Dr. Moustafa Elfeki, Director of the Library of Alexandria, said that Abiy Ahmed’s statements cannot be taken in good faith, and that it is evident that he is consuming time in order to single-handedly start the second filling of the Renaissance Dam reservoir. He maintained that this situation would not last longer as there are international demands calling for the withdrawal of the Nobel Peace Prize from Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian Prime Minister, since his statements “have nothing to do with peace.”
He stated, “The issue of the Renaissance Dam has become the most crucial problem of the region, and I believe that the convergence of views between Egypt and Sudan has strengthened their position in the face of Ethiopia… This is no longer a dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia, but a stance taken by the downstream countries to confront the Ethiopian intransigence.”
With reference to the use of military force to strike the Dam, Elfeki pointed out that Egypt cannot predict the technical risks of this procedure, and that it is too early to reflect on this possibility that is likely to cause damage to Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. He added that this matter should be resolved peacefully, and that President Sisi is a wise and stoic leader, who does not feel compelled to take uncalculated risks.
